Many students find it difficult to pay attention at school.

What are the reasons for this?

What could be done to solve this problem?

It is no secret that majority of students struggle to pay attention at school due to several reasons that can be solved by taking certain steps that will make going to school more enjoyable.

The main reason for the lack of attention on the part of students at school is the way of teaching that is practiced at majority of schools. Teaching is an art that has to be altered according to the needs of the students. Passive teaching without the involvement of students is bound to bore students. For instance, a lecturer who delivers their lecture without interacting with their students will not attract much attention from the majority of average scoring class until and unless they are involved in the discussion. Therefore, active learning should be the way forward for schools wherein a facilitator conducts a session in which students themselves teach each other what they have prepared beforehand. This will be a more interesting way of learning for the students. Moreover, students could be attracted to studies by showing them animated videos on a concerned topic or rewarding them for paying attention during a class after answering questions correctly at the end of a class. These steps could ignite interest and participation from students.

Another major reason for this trend is the long number of school hours. We all know that the attention span of a human being is limited, therefore, school hours should be decreased, somewhat, with an increase in gaps between lectures so that students may provide undivided attention for a limited time period at least. Besides that, the availability of mobile phones during school hours is another reason for this behaviour. Students who bring a mobile phone along during school hours spend most of their day playing games and surfing the net on the mobile set. Banning mobile phones in schools could prove beneficial in curtailing the disinterest shown by many students. Furthermore, parents have a role to play as well. They must actively participate and engage with teachers to know the reasons for their child's lack of interest in school because reasons may vary from student to student and teachers can identify them the best. In addition to this, feedback from students is of utmost importance and their recommendations should be entertained to make going to school a lively and enlightening experience.

In conclusion, I would like to reiterate that the teaching styles should be moulded according to the needs of the students so that they may show more interest during school hours and mobile phones should be disallowed on campus and a possible decrease in school hours should be considered as well . These measures will solve this problem effectively.
