Rule: WHO is relative pronoun for humans refers to people. THAT is relative pronoun which may refer to people (usually a class, such as a team or type of person), animals, groups, or things. However, WHO seems to be preferred when referring to people. The use of “THAT” when referring to people is considered by some to be very poor English. Some feel that it makes people less human. He is the only man who won a prize He is the only man that won a prize These sentences are both correct or acceptable, but as stated above, the first one is preferred. There are too many sources for English grammar. It’s best to conduct your own search and settle on one that explains matters at your level so that you benefit most.
