Are you planning on watching the US presidential debates?

Here is some key vocabulary which might help you to understand what is going on.

moderator - the moderator in the debate will ask the questions and make sure that the rules are followed. The moderator guides the debate to the topics that they want covered in the debate.

nonpartisan - not a member or connected with a particular political party

segment - a smaller amount of time which the candidates in the debate will have the chance to talk. For example the candidate will be allowed to speak on a topic in 10 minute segments.

The topics or subjects which will be discussed in the first debate include:

- their record in office (their past performance as politicians)

- the current Supreme Court vacancy

- Covid-19

- the economy

- race and violence in American cities

- integrity of the election (integrity: the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles)
