I would say basically it is grammatically correct. Since you use "also" the sentence doesn't stand by itself. We really need the context of the sentence and what you are trying to say.
Is 'the second year' finished or are you still in it? If it is finished, use a past simple.
In your sentence, there must have been several instances of fate sticking with the person in the first year so that a series of events has carried on. The 'also', as pointed out, gives a strange impression. We would have had to have heard the story of the first year so that 'also' continues the story.
