    To whom does the word "his" refer to in the sentence "A man had another man on his knees" , the former man or the latter man ?

    Tks for your response. If that is the case, then consider the following sentence: "Jack ate and apple in the jungle" and "Jack ate in the jungle". Here "in the jungle", isn't it referring to "ate" ? If that is true then "his" should refer to the former man ? or am I wrong ? is so, how ?
