English Language Schools in Australia

This Australia section of our new Good School Guide has details of over 60 English language schools and university language centers all over Australia.
Inclusion in the Guide is by recommendation, and we generally list only those schools which are:
  • accredited by NEAS, the National ELT Accreditation Scheme in Australia, and

  • members of English Australia (Elicos Association), the national association for accredited English language schools.

How to find a school

There are four ways to search for a school in the Guide:
  1. Keyword Search: use the search box in the left side panel to enter one or more keywords: all schools in the Australia section will be searched.

  2. Browse by State: Click one of the Australian states on the map to browse an A-Z list of all schools in that state:
  3. List all schools: browse the full A-Z list of over 60 schools in Australia, with 30 schools listed on each page.

  4. Advanced Search: use this detailed search page to look for particular locations, courses, examinations, facilities or other features.
All these options are available in the left side panel on every page of the Australia section of the Guide.

Our Current Recommendations

Below is English Forum's current selection of recommended schools in Australia. This short-list changes from time to time and includes both private language schools and public universities and colleges.
International House Sydney: IH Sydney is a cosmopolitan language centre attracting students from many countries. Two locations: one in the city, the other in Manley, one of Sydney's beach resorts. Another IH affiliated school, International House Queensland, is located in the popular northern city of Cairns. Both IH schools offer a wide range of courses and examinations for students, and Cambridge CELTA teacher training courses.
La Trobe University (Melbourne): Founded in 1974, the Language Centre of La Trobe University is a high quality centre with an international reputation, excellent facilities and resources for study and leisure. Located on a parkland campus, 35 minutes from the centre of Melbourne.
Milner International College of English (Perth): Established in 1984, Milner College occupies its own modern five storey building in the centre of Perth, Western Australia - a low cost, beachside city of 1.2 million, with sunshine year round. Cambridge and IELTS courses, CELTA teacher training. Excellent facilities include language laboratory, scuba centre, rooftop garden, spacious cafe.
Sydney College of English (Sydney): located close to Sydney's universities, this school offers a full range of general, exam and specialised course, with high quality homestay and activities programmes. 35 classrooms, computer room, study centre with free internet access, language laboratory.
Edith Cowan University (Perth): The International English Centre is based on the university campus and students have access to all university facilities and services. The centre offers a variety of EFL courses throughout the year, and Cambridge CELTA training for teachers.
Melbourne Language Centre (Melbourne): a highly regarded school with two campuses in the centre of Melbourne. Programs include General English, English for Academic Purposes, High School Preparation, Business English, Cambridge and IELTS Exam Preparation. Homestay accommodation.
South Australian College of English - SACE (Adelaide): Located in the centre of Adelaide, the college offers modern facilities, a good nationality mix and a broad range of English courses, examination preparation, study tours and holiday programmes with fun activities and social programs.
University of Queensland (Brisbane): The university's Institute of Continuing and TESOL Education is on the main campus, 6km from Brisbane's city centre. Courses offered include intensive English courses for General, Academic, Business and Special Purposes, and Cambridge and IELTS preparation courses.
